In a new Collider interview, Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith discussed one of the most powerful scenes in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2: Rhaenyra’s long-awaited ascension to the Iron Throne.

D’Arcy revealed they deliberately approached the moment without traditional triumph, highlighting the heavy personal cost of power.

  • Emma D’Arcy says Rhaenyra’s ascension moment was very vulnerable
  • She’s currently facing identity crisis
  • Emma wanted that moment to feel like more of a political drama

Robbing the moment of triumph

D’Arcy explained their creative choice:

“I was curious about how the two of you wanted to approach not just Rhaenyra ascending the steps to the Iron Throne — it feels like she’s physically staggering to get there — but also the look that she shares with Daemon once she is seated. I certainly wanted to rob that moment of its triumph, which for my money feels honest in a family where the political ambition and the interpersonal strife are sort of part of the same thing.”

The toll of power on identity

For D’Arcy, the scene was an opportunity to explore deeper themes.

“I felt there was an opportunity in that scene to look at how power and the pursuit of power, the toll that that takes on identity, on the body, on one’s sense of self. So that by the time she does finally claim that seat so long dreamt of, she’s kind of rudderless in some way and actually maybe finally claiming the long sort of thing could actually cause a sort of identity crisis.”

This portrayal shows Rhaenyra not as a victorious queen in her prime, but as a leader physically and emotionally drained by years of war, loss, and ambition. The staggering steps and the shared look with Daemon underscore the isolation that comes with ultimate power.

A honest reflection of leadership

Together, Rhaenyra and Daemon actors bring raw honesty to Rhaenyra’s victory. Emma D’Arcy’s thoughtful breakdown adds layers to Rhaenyra’s character as Season 3 continues. What was meant to be a crowning achievement instead becomes a moment of vulnerability and self-doubt.
