A triple-edged sword relationship

“It’s not even double-edged, it’s triple-edged, it’s really complicated, and there’s a charge about the energy when all three of them are in the room.”
According to Smith, Mysaria (played by Sonoya Mizuno) played a pivotal role in Daemon’s emotional journey.
“Weirdly, Mysaria really dragged Daemon out of his grief with his brother in a way and really empowered him. There was a whole world in which he could have just run away into the mountains with her. There’s a deep, deep, deep affection for her even though there is this sense of betrayal.”
Smith’s admiration for Sonoya Mizuno
The actor also praised his co-star, saying he loves being on screen with Mizuno.
“I think Sonoya is such a beautiful, acute actor that I just love being on screen with her.”
This admiration shines through in the scenes, adding authenticity to the complicated bond between Daemon and Mysaria.
Why the triangle works so well
Smith’s comments highlight how the love triangle serves the story on multiple levels; it’s entertaining, emotionally layered, and full of tension. The dynamic between Daemon, Rhaenyra, and Mysaria adds depth to the ongoing war and explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, grief, and desire. Despite being married, the royal couple keep having a complicated bond with Mysaria.
