Freddie Fox, who plays Ser Gwayne Hightower in House of the Dragon, has given new insight into his character’s relationship with Prince Daeron Targaryen (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth). In a talk with Decider, Fox highlighted the caring yet complex bond between the two, contrasting it with Ormund’s more controlling approach.
Quick read:
- Gwayne has a different relationship with Daeron than Ormund
- His approach is genuine and caring rather than manipulative
- Gwayne sees potential in Daeron
Gwayne’s approach to Daeron
Fox described Gwayne as having a more respectful and guiding relationship with the young prince:
“Gwayne is… he’s got a very different relationship with Daeron than Ormund does. He’s not trying to control him in the same way. He sees the potential in him, and he wants to guide him, but he also respects him as a person. There’s a lot of care there.”

This dynamic positions Gwayne as a more level-headed mentor figure within the Green faction, offering Daeron love, support and guidance rather than manipulation.
Contrast with Ormund
The difference between Gwayne and Ormund Hightower (James Norton) is stark. While Ormund uses conditional affection and control, described by Norton as a “psychologically abusive” dynamic with elements of Stockholm Syndrome, Gwayne takes a more genuine and caring parent-like approach.
This sets up interesting tension and potential factions within Team Green in Season 3 and especially Season 4, as different characters vie for influence over the young dragonrider.
What this means for Daeron’s arc
Daeron, torn between his Hightower upbringing and Targaryen heritage, benefits from Gwayne’s more balanced perspective. Fox’s comments suggest Gwayne will play a key role in helping Daeron navigate his identity, morality, and place in the war; potentially stepping into a more prominent “king-making” or mentoring position in the final season.
Fans have already begun speculating that Gwayne could become a major influence on Daeron as the story progresses, especially given Ormund’s more extreme methods.
