Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond Targaryen, has compared Harrenhal to “The White Lotus of Westeros”: a place of forced self-reflection and emotional detox.
In a new interview with Los Angeles Times, Mitchell described the cursed castle as a retreat where characters are stripped of their defenses.
Quick read:
- Ewan Mitchell says everyone gets defenseless in Harrenhal
- He says Aemond is powerless without Vhagar
- There’s still chance for redemption for him
“It’s a place you go for a retreat. You have all of your toxins drawn out of you. You have to confront them head on. You discover like the darkest, deepest places of yourself. And the general manager of that place is Alys Rivers.”

Powerless without Vhagar
Mitchell explained that Harrenhal serves as a crucible for Aemond in Season 3. Without his dragon Vhagar by his side, he is forced to confront who he is when stripped of his greatest source of power.

“We know his dragon Vhagar is missing. And if Aemond is nothing without his dragon, then does he really deserve her? We’ve got to challenge what we know of the character already… Vhagar was the wind in his sails.”
In Episode 5, a wounded Aemond returns to the story after disappearing earlier in the season. He defends Alys Rivers from invaders, showing a rare moment of vulnerability. Mitchell believes this hints at a more complex, possibly redeemable side of Aemond:
“In the moment he saves Alys, maybe there is a redeemable Aemond in there somewhere.”
Harrenhal and Alys Rivers are shaping up to be major turning points for Aemond this season, forcing him to face his trauma, isolation, and identity beyond his fearsome reputation.
