Hugh Hammer’s betrayal has been one of the most talked‑about twists in House of the Dragon Season 3. While Ulf’s treason at Tumbleton drew immediate attention, showrunner Ryan Condal made it clear in a Collider interview that Hugh’s actions shouldn’t be overlooked. According to him, Hugh has never truly fought for Rhaenyra’s cause — only for himself.

Quick read

  • Condal says Hugh Hammer acted only out of self‑interest.
  • He betrayed Rhaenyra by abandoning orders and refusing aid.
  • Ulf’s betrayal was more obvious, but Hugh’s was just as real.

Condal’s breakdown of Hugh’s betrayal

Condal didn’t mince words when asked about Hugh’s role in the war: “Did Hugh not betray Rhaenyra by disobeying her orders, abandoning his post in King’s Landing, showing up to a war to which he was not invited, parking his dragon, and refusing aid when everything went to hell? Ulf’s betrayal was felt more acutely due to the direct outcome, but do not discount Hugh’s own treason.”

He went on to explain that Hugh’s honorable image is misleading: “Outwardly, Hugh might seem like a much more honorable man than Ulf, but this man has only ever acted out of self‑interest. He never had a stake in this war or Rhaenyra’s claim outside what suited his ambitions. And now one of the two things he cared about (his wife) is a casualty of this war.”

What this means for Hugh’s arc

By framing Hugh as self‑serving, Condal highlights how fragile alliances are in the Dance of the Dragons. Hugh’s betrayal may not have been as explosive as Ulf’s, but it underscores the danger of relying on dragonseeds whose loyalty was never rooted in conviction. With his wife gone, Hugh’s motivations are stripped bare, leaving his future role in the conflict uncertain.
