Peter Claffey says season 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be sadder and a different kind of hard for Dunk. Speaking to TV Insider at HBO’s Youth premiere, the actor sketched the next chapter of Ser Duncan the Tall’s road with Egg.

Claffey exclaimed:
“There’s a lot more sadness to this story, I think, and it’s a totally different challenge for Dunk for sure. The people that he’s dealing with are on a much less serious scale. You’re not dealing with your Royal Targaryens and people of King’s Landing, but he tries his hand at diplomacy and finds out how difficult that is to work with.”
As can be seen, he clearly reveals that Dunk is going to immerse himself into the diplomatic politics for the first time.

From King’s Landing to a smaller war
Season 1 put Dunk in front of princes, a trial of seven, and the glare of Ashford. Season 2 adapts George R.R. Martin’s novella The Sworn Sword. Dunk and Egg ride into a drought-stricken Reach and take service with bitter old Ser Eustace Osgrey (Peter Mullan), who is locked in a land fight with Lady Rohanne Webber (Lucy Boynton).
The stakes look smaller on paper. No Iron Throne. No royal tourney. Claffey’s point is that the work is still brutal, just quieter. Dunk will probably have to talk, negotiate, and fail at both. He also “tries his hand and fails at talking to women, multiple times again this season.” Claffey has called The Sworn Sword a tragic love story and his favorite of the three Dunk and Egg novellas.
A harder shoot
Filming of the second season wrapped up in August. Claffey has said Dunk spends more time alone this year, which made the set feel isolating. Showrunner Ira Parker called Season 2 “10 times harder” than the first, blaming weather, and drought locations. Claffey still called making it “a lot of fun.” Season 2 is due in the first half of 2027.
The first season won an Emmy for “Outstanding Stunt Performance” and landed nine nominations, including “Outstanding Drama Series.” The second season is aiming somewhere else: not spectacle first, but the cost of trying to keep the peace when nobody wants it.
