Episode 4 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, titled “Seven,” ends with one of the most shocking and powerful moments of the season so far. The episode centers on the looming “Trial of Seven” between Ser Duncan the Tall and Prince Aerion Targaryen, raising the stakes higher than ever, both politically and morally.

As Westerosi law dictates, a Trial of Seven requires each side to field 7 knights to fight on their behalf. Dunk, accused of attacking Prince Aerion after defending the innocent puppeteer Tanselle, demands trial by combat. Aerion, eager to crush him publicly, escalates it to a Trial of Seven: a legal right that is quickly approved by the royal council.

Quick read:

  • Prince Baelor Targaryen chooses to fight beside Dunk.
  • Raymun Fossoway is knighted to participate in the trial.
  • Steffan Fossoway betrays Dunk.

Prince Baelor and Dunk’s private little meeting

From the start A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms ep 4, the odds are stacked against Dunk. Imprisoned early in the episode, he is invited for a meet by Baelor Targaryen to explain his actions. Dunk appears confident and defends the ones he protected, saying he only did what a knight must do. On this, he is told by Prince Baelor that even good intentions come with dire consequences. Baelor doesn’t excuse Dunk’s actions outright, but he respects the values behind them.

When Dunk is finally given a single day to assemble six knights to stand beside him, things look grim. He initially finds support in Ser Steffon Fossoway, who promises loyalty and even claims he’ll bring others with him. But just as the trial is about to begin, Steffon betrays Dunk and switches sides, aligning himself with Aerion instead. The betrayal leaves Dunk nearly defeated before the swords are even drawn.

In a moment of loyalty and friendship, Raymun Fossoway steps forward to fill the gap, despite not being a knight. With time running out, Ser Lyonel Baratheon knights Raymun on the spot, allowing him to fight legally beside Dunk. Even then, Dunk is still one knight short. He makes a desperate plea to the assembled crowd, asking anyone, any knight to stand with him. No one moves.

What happens when Dunk fails to find a seventh knight?

Just when all hope seems lost, the episode delivers its jaw-dropping twist.

Prince Baelor Targaryen, heir to the Iron Throne, steps forward and declares that he will fight on Dunk’s side.

The reaction is immediate and sends silence ripples through the crowd. Even Prince Maekar, Baelor’s brother and Aerion’s father, is furious and demands an explanation. Baelor’s response is simple but powerful claiming that Dunk did what any true knight should do, he protected the innocent. The gods, Baelor insists, will decide who is truly right, doesn’t matter who sides with whom.

For Egg, the moment is deeply emotional. Watching his uncle choose justice over family loyalty reinforces everything Dunk has taught him about honor, courage, and what knighthood should stand for.

The episode ends there, but Prince Baelor leaves a lasting impression. His willingness to risk his life and his claim to the Iron Throne, for what is right instantly cements him as one of the most honorable Targaryens. Despite it being a dangerous move, politically and personally, Baelor doesn’t hesitate. He shows that for him, righteousness matters more than power.

With all seven champions finally chosen, episode 4 closes on a tense cliffhanger. The Trial of Seven is set, and episode 5 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms promises a brutal, emotionally charged battle that could reshape the fates of Dunk, Egg, and the Targaryen family itself.
