Despite renewed momentum after its successful debut, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is charting a different path than its pricier sibling House of the Dragon. Season 2 will maintain the same lean structure as season one, sticking with six episodes rather than expanding the scope.

Ira Parker (showrunner) revealed the creative constraints facing the production in The Hollywood Reporter, based on George R.R. Martin’s second Dunk and Egg novella, The Sworn Sword. “It’ll still be six episodes. I think the scope will be the same, maybe even smaller,” Parker stated, explaining the reasoning behind the compact format.

Quick read:

  • Season 2 will remain six episodes like season one

  • Budget has stayed the same despite inflation pressures

  • Story’s drought setting requires relocation from Belfast to sunny location

Budget pressures forcing creative solutions

The modest budget that made season one so resourceful remains fixed for season two, but inflation and production demands are creating new challenges. According to Parker’s interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “The budget has stayed the same, but everything is more expensive due to inflation.”

The story itself presents unique logistical hurdles: “Plus, book two takes place in a drought, so we can’t shoot exteriors in Belfast. We have to go to a sunny location with no water, which costs money — that’s a major expense that we did not have in season one.” This constraint forces production to relocate from Northern Ireland to an arid climate, straining already limited resources and creating what Parker called “a major expense.

Optimism amid constraints

Despite the budgetary pressures and logistical challenges, Parker remains enthusiastic about the creative direction. “I’m having a lot of fun season two. It’s going to be a different season, and, I hope, for the better,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. The showrunner’s confidence suggests that creative ingenuity, not budget size, will determine the quality of season two—a philosophy that has already proven successful in bringing Martin’s beloved novella adaptation to life.
