HBO has officially scrapped its long-troubled Jon Snow spinoff and is now developing a new Game of Thrones sequel centered on Arya Stark, marking a major strategic shift in how the network approaches its flagship franchise expansion. The project is “in very early development” with writer Quoc Dang Tran (Drops of God) already attached, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, though George R.R. Martin declined to comment on the unannounced project in detail.

Jon Snow’s Broken Vision: Why HBO Walked Away
Kit Harington’s Jon Snow project remained in developmental limbo for years, with the actor personally pushing for an unexpectedly dark vision that HBO ultimately rejected. Harington envisioned Jon as a “broken man with PTSD,” living alone in the wilderness after discarding his sword Longclaw and chasing away his direwolf Ghost, spending his days building cabins only to burn them down.
Most strikingly, Harington wanted Jon Snow to ultimately die—a downbeat trajectory that HBO considered too depressing for audiences. The network, concerned about the pitch’s bleakness, decided the project didn’t align with their vision for the franchise’s future.

In recent years, Harington himself has moved on from the character entirely, telling outlets that no story “good enough could ever be agreed upon,” and last month declaring he was done with Jon Snow forever: “No, god no. I don’t wanna go anywhere near it. I spent 10 years doing that.” With both the actor and network walking away, HBO needed a new hero to carry the franchise forward beyond House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Arya’s Journey Across Essos Offers Fresh Opportunity
The Arya Stark project solves the Jon Snow problem by using a protagonist HBO executives believe has wider narrative possibilities. Last seen sailing away from Westeros toward adventure, Arya offers “an easy route into the Game of Thrones world for new viewers” set entirely in the continent of Essos, geographically and narratively separate from the crowded Seven Kingdoms storylines.
Unlike Jon’s inward-looking, trauma-focused journey, Arya’s spinoff has the potential for exploration and discovery. HBO is betting that audiences remain invested in following one of Game of Thrones’ most beloved characters into unmapped territory.
