Sony has just unveiled the first trailer for its next Spider-Man villain movie, Kraven the Hunter. This one stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular big game hunter Kraven, one of the more iconic villains in Spidey’s rogues gallery. In the comics, Kraven comes to the Big Apple to hunt our friendly neighborhood web-slinger. But this movie is his origin story, so don’t expect Spider-Man to show up for more than a cameo, if that.

Check out the trailer below:

Sony has had some hits and misses with its Spider-Man villain movies, which so far consist of VenomVenom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius. Whatever happens next, it looks like Taylor-Johnson is having a ball playing this role. There are stunts galore in this trailer, including a particularly bloody bit where Kraven chomps off a person’s nose and spits it at the camera.

The move will explore Kraven’s youth and his relationship with his father Nikolaï Kravinoff, played by Russell Crowe. It looks like in this version of Kraven’s upbringing, he’s mauled by a lion and gets some lion blood mixed with his own, which seemingly lends him his superhuman agility and strength. Sure.

We also got a brief tease for Rhino (Alessandro Nivola), another big Spider-Man villain. Why is he facing off against Kraven? Well, I guess it just made sense to have a big game hunter fight a rhinoceros man. That said, keep in mind that Sony has a track record of juking audiences with Spider-Man villains in its trailers, like when it featured Michael Keaton as the Vulture in trailers for Morbius only for him to be relegated to a post-credits scene in the actual movie. Here’s hoping the Rhino and Kraven showdown gets the screen time it deserves.
