Game of Thrones ended last month with a bittersweet ending, giving us some beautiful moments and memories of our much-loved characters we’re going to miss for the rest of our days. Yet, it left us with some questions that the showrunners couldn’t provide an answer to, due to time constraint and the fact that the entire story had to be concluded within the last six episodes. One of them was the mystery Prince of Dorne we heard of through Varys and saw in the final episode, yet his name was never revealed. We now know more about him. Read on!

One of the final scenes of the series was the Dragonpit meeting, where we saw a number of known characters like Arya Stark, Sansa Stark, Samwell Tarly, Robin Arryn, Yara Greyjoy, Yohn Royce, Edmure Tully and Bran Stark. However, a few new unnamed characters were also seen – notable among them was the Dornish Prince played by Toby Osmond. Some fans speculated him to be Quentin Martell – a book only character but Toby wouldn’t fit in the role of a character that is much younger. Toby recently spoke to Screen Rant shedding some light upon the character he actually played in the series finale, and the confusion around it. He said:

“Someone mentioned a possible name, but I think it was an invented name. So it would have just been a series name. A lot of people have suggested Quentyn Martell, of course. But just doing the math, I thought, well, Prince Doran’s kid… I’m just, I’m too old, unfortunately. There’s no way I could be a brother of Trystane because he could probably be my son, to be honest. So I just figured I was the younger brother of Doran and the Red Viper. Or, there was an interesting fan theory about another house in Sunspeare and Dorne, I can’t remember the name of it. But I’d like to think that I’m a Martell.”

Toby thus proved the fan speculation to be wrong and also confirmed that he was rather supposed to play an unnamed character who is the younger brother of Doran Martell and Oberyn Martell. He also added:

“And Pedro Pascal [Oberyn], what a fantastic character as well, I was shocked. I was like “are you sure you’re casting ME as his younger brother”, which is what I was assuming it was. Also, fun fact, I was given his scimitar, his sword that was custom made for his character. But he never used it. He used his spear of course. So yeah, on set, I had this beautiful snake-headed scimitar. It had, I think it was a cobra on the top of the hilt. And then the cross guard heads were snakes as well. Beautiful, beautiful sword.”

We won’t find out the true name of the character until the showrunners decide to reveal it. Based on the books so far we believe the character was just introduced in the show to propel the story. Yet since the final two books are still under progress, there can always be room for more in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy world.
