Aidan Gillen bid farewell to Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish, his Game of Thrones character, in the show’s seventh season, when the the Stark siblings unexpectedly showed him the door. As the eighth and final season approaches, Gillen is looking back on his time on the show, and what he hopes the ending will look like. Speakingn Bang Showbiz, Gillen said that, despite everything, he’d like the show to have a “happy ending,” at least for some characters.

I mean a happy ending would be really strange, wouldn’t it? Maybe that’s what it is. I’ve always been fond of Sansa Stark despite, you know, the way things went. I honestly don’t know. At the start, when we started shooting it, it seemed like Tyrion, Arya Stark, Bran Stark you know, people who had the worst things done to them [would win], but I just think even that is too predictable. Hopefully, it’ll be something surprising, that’s all I know.

I’m all for happy endings, but I agree with Gillen that it doesn’t seem particularly like this show. We can hope.

But that’s not all Gillen had to say about the final season. There has been a lot of hype and speculation behind who will sit on the Iron Throne in the end, about who will “win” the game of thrones. Gillen doesn’t think the series will necessarily have a “winner,” per se:

There’s all this stuff about who’s going to win. I think that changed a few seasons ago, you know, the whole idea of it being a game, the winning – that there can be a winner or a loser just seemed to go out the window. It shifted and became about something else, so other than that I hope it’s something really surprising and, you know, shocking.

I don’t know, I’m still holding out hope for a winner, although I can see them pulling the rug out from under me, too. Good thing we only have less than two weeks left before we find out!
