At the end of the first season of Shadow and Bone, Alina Starkov (Jessica Mei Li) and her friends left the power-hungry General Kirigan (Ben Barnes) for dead in the Shadow Fold, a rift of dangerous darkness that cuts through the lands of Ravka. That seemed to be the end of things, although maybe leaving a guy with the power to command shadows in a shadow realm wasn’t such a great idea…

We see just how bad an idea it is in the trailer for season 1, as Kirigan (now going by the villainous name of the Darkling) emerges from the Shadow Fold with “an unkillable army made of shadows.” D’oh.

Ben Barnes returns as the Darkling in trailer for Shadow and Bone season 2

The first season of Shadow and Bone was based largely on…well, the book Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. Season is based primarily on the sequel Siege and Storm, together with some stuff from the final book in the trilogy, Ruin and Rising. We see an important new character in the trailer: Nikolai Lantsov (Patrick Gibson), a Ravkan noble who first introduces him as a privateer (a pirate, basically, but don’t call him that to his face) named Sturmhond.

The Crows, a band of mercenaries from the other side of the Shadow Fold, will also feature in season 2, although the writers will largely be making up their parts rather than directly adapting many of the events from their Six of Crows duology.

Shadow and Bone season 2 premieres on Netflix on March 16.
