We’ve given The Big Bang Theory an ‘alternative’ TV Award – what did it win? (Picture: CBS)

There’s been plenty of great TV that’s kept us talking right through the year, with the Christmas period still to come.

It won’t be long before we ring in 2019, and with it more period dramas, dating shows, dancing competitions and bug eating.

But so much has happened on TV this year, so Metro.co.uk want to take stock and remember the moments that stuck in our minds.

To do that we’ve given out alternative ‘awards’ for the telly highlights from this year.

Roll on 2019.

The Best Reality TV Moment Of The Year Award: Harry Redknapp reuniting with his wife Sandra on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!

Harry was reunited with Sandra days before the I’m A Celebrity final (Picture: Rex Features)

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when just days before the final, this year’s camp mates were reunited with their loved ones in the jungle.

Harry quickly became a favourite among viewers for the way he spoke about his wife, who he has been married to for over 50 years.

So when he saw her in the jungle after three weeks, of course he burst into tears and couldn’t let go of her hand.

No wonder he’s officially I’m a Celebrity’s ‘most popular contestant ever’ with the bookies.

The Most Shocking TV Moment Of The Year Award: Julia Montague dies in Bodyguard

Julia’s death in Bodyguard was a massive plot twist (Picture: BBC)

If you haven’t seen Bodyguard a) apologies for the spoiler, and b) where have you been?

The drama, starring Richard Madden as David Budd and Keeley Hawes as Julia Montague, threw a massive curve ball when a bomb went off during Julia’s speech and she was caught up in the blast.

Fans were speculating over Julia’s fate in the explosion, but if you managed to avoid the massive spoiler on the front cover of the Radio Times, the news that she had died in the finale was a massive plot twist. Especially as Julia and David seemed to be getting closer…

The Best Doctor Who Of The Year Award: Jodie Whittaker

Jodie Whittaker will be back for another series of Doctor Who (Picture: BBC)

We cheated a bit with this one as there has only been one Doctor Who this year, but Jodie Whittaker has been absolutely brilliant.

As the first woman to take on the role, expectations were high especially following the iconic performances of former Time Lords like David Tennant and Peter Capaldi.

But Jodie made the role completely her own. Her Doctor was kind, clever, geeky, cute and brilliant.

The Broadchurch star has led the charge superbly bringing warmth and her own spin to a well-established character. Thank goodness she’s back for another series.

The ‘Was That Really This Year?’ Of The Year Award: Ruti Olajugbagbe wins The Voice

Yes, there was a series of The Voice UK this year.

Back in April 18-year-old Ruti Olajugbagbe was crowned the winner of the 2018 series.

She bagged herself a record deal with Polydor and released her debut single, a cover of Dreams by The Cranberries.

Coached by Sir Tom Jones, Ruti saw off stiff competition from Will.i.am’s finalist Donel Mengena.

In the live final, Ruti performed a duet with Tom – a beautiful version of What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. She also performed Daniel Bedingfield’s If You’re Not The One.

The Voice UK will be back for a brand new series in the New Year.

The TV Villain Of The Year Award: Adam Collard from Love Island

Adam’s showdown with Rosie Williams was the first major bust up the series this year.

Adam briefly became the most hated person on TV after viewers saw him graft on to islander Zara Holland (who is still with) while he was coupled up with Rosie.

During a furious row in front of the entire villa, Adam was seen smirking as Rosie tearily told him how much he had upset it.

The moment was so controversial that even Women’s Aid issued a statement on ’emotional abuse’ after the episode.

The Best Day Time TV Moment Of The Year Award: Alison Hammond knocks a guy into water on live TV

Alison Hammond reminded us of the perils of live TV when this moment happened on This Morning in October.

As Alison attempted to give the weather report she initially came a cropper when her clothes got caught on a sparkly Welsh dragon.

But just moments later things got exponentially worse when she accidentally pushed an innocent bystander – who was wearing white – into the dock. TV gold.

The ‘They Went Out Way Too Early’ Award: Perri Shakes-Drayton Dancing On Ice

The Team GB athlete was eliminated third in this year’s Dancing On Ice as she landed in the skate off against singer Lemar.

The Team GB Olympian took to the ice alongside partner Hamish, as they danced to Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger (What doesn’t kill you).

While Lemar was an impressive skater, Perri showed promise, and her first ever routine with Hamish to Running by Beyonce was both beautiful and unique.

Sadly it wasn’t enough to save her, but if she stayed in a few more weeks she could have really stepped up her game.

Ultimately the series was won by The X Factor star Jake Quickenden and his partner Vanessa Bauer.

In 2019 the show returns with the likes of Gemma Collins, Richard Blackwood, James Jordan and Jane Danson taking to the ice.

The ‘End Of An Era’ Award: Big Brother’s final episode

Cameron Cole was the final ever winner of Big Brother on Channel 5 (Picture: Rex Features)

Big Brother was axed by Channel 5 back in September after seven years on the channel.

The final was a poignant episode from the start as host Emma Willis teared up during her farewell speech.

And 19-year-old Cameron Cole, who came out as gay on the show, was named the last ever winner of the series.

The Show We Can’t Wait For In 2019 Award: Game Of Thrones

Winter has finally come on Game Of Thrones season eight (Picture: HBO/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock)

It’s the final season of Game Of Thrones next year.

Who lives? Who dies? Who gets the Iron Throne? Will Jon Snow ever stop knowing nothing? All our questions will be answered in season eight.

Details are thin on the ground, but we have two teaser trailers to pick over, and some hints from cast members such as Gwendoline Christie, who reckons the last season is gonna mess us up a bit.

According to the 40-year-old actress, who plays Brienne of Tarth on the show, fans are going to need ‘professional help’ when it’s all over.

The ‘We Never Saw That Coming’ Award: Declan Donnelly hosts Saturday Night Takeaway alone for the first time

Saturday Night Takeaway won’t be back on our screens until 2020 as Ant McPartlin continues rehab (Picture: Rex features)

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly. Ant and Dec. They go together like fish and chips.

In all their years in the entertainment business you rarely saw one without the other. So it was strange to see Dec take to the stage for the last two episodes of Saturday Night Takeaway by himself back in March, after his presenting partner was charged for drink driving.

And and Dec have hosted SNT together since it began in 2002.

Dec did a grand job of both episodes, with the finale taking place in Florida.

The Biggest Let Down Of The Year Award: Rick Grimes not dying on The Walking Dead

Rick made his exit from The Walking Dead this year as Andrew Lincoln left the show (Picture: AMC)

The build up to Andrew Lincoln’s exit as Rick, including farewell speeches from the the TWD cast, made it seem like he was going to be killed off.

However the injured hero was later airlifted at the last minute by a mysterious helicopter and whisked away to an unknown destination, still very much alive.

It divided fans as some wanted something a bit more memorable (and by that read: grisly), but it didn’t happen, and they were left with more questions than answers.

The Walking Dead boss Scott Gimple had to speak out in defence of how Rick’s story played out.

The TV Wedding Of The Year Award: Sheldon and Amy on The Big Bang Theory

Mark Hamill would elevate any TV wedding (Picture: Getty Images)

The Big Bang Theory managed to get a bit of Star Wars involved for Sheldon and Amy’s wedding, and had actual Mark Hamill – aka Luke Skywalker himself – officiate the ceremony.

It was a sweet episode, with Mark blubbing uncontrollably as Sheldon and Amy tied the knot.

The couple are currently enjoying married life in the final season, but recent teasers suggest that there may be trouble ahead. Surely these two brainboxes can work it out?
