If there’s something worse than a lackadaisical ending that leaves people unsatisfied and seems to argue for a very lazy bit of writing it’s a tease that won’t ever come to fruition since according to Ana Dumaraog of ScreenRant there is in fact a secret alternate ending to Game of Thrones. This of course would likely come as a shock to a lot of loyal fans that were up in arms over how the series finally ended considering that Daenerys went into a vengeful mode that might not have been as devastating if not for Drogon still being up and able to decimate nearly all of King’s Landing. Just think if his brothers had been with him, the city would have been razed without Jon Snow’s forces ever needing to set foot inside. Since the series ended months ago a lot of fans haven’t been able to let go as they’ve continued to offer ideas that could have been better and have even been heard to rant and rave about the true motivations behind this move or that one that might have better explained the betrayal and the eventual outcome of the entire story. But a secret ending being filmed does raise a lot of questions and a great deal of hope that doesn’t seem likely to go anywhere since the show is done, over, and whatever prequel might still be in the works is still a long ways off.
Kristofer Hivju, the actor that played Tormund Giantsbane, was the one to let slip the fact that the cast did shoot another alternate ending, but without any real hard, factual data of what was filmed it’s hard to say that it could have been something to give people hope in turning the story around or whether it was just something goofy for the cast to experience as a pleasing end to a long journey. Ashley Boucher of People has more to say on this matter. In any case it doesn’t seem as though it could do much more than shine a light on something that people haven’t seen yet, as the showrunners have moved on and George R.R. Martin hasn’t even finished the series as of yet. That last part could be why some people are still holding out hope that there might be a way to set things right and create an ending that didn’t feel so rushed, but the hope in that is pretty weak since even with the idea that Martin’s books will offer a different ending, the show has been released, it’s over, done, finito, ended, wrapped and cut. The fact that people didn’t like it doesn’t change the fact and an alternate ending at this point would likely be called non-canon anyway, so it’s kind of a moot point. If it is the cast just goofing around and creating something silly it would be kind of fun to see and even if it is something that takes the show in a different direction it’s still something that you can’t help but think would be enough for the many naysayers to form a petition about in order to get the last season of GoT redone by someone that had the guts and the pull to do it. Of course that’s assuming anyone would want to dare touch the show after it was deemed such a huge success overall.
This is something far too many fans don’t seem to realize, that once the story is done, over, and presented, changing it is of course always possible, but only if someone has the idea, the gumption, and the talent to make it so. Setting the fans loose on something like this when saying ‘make it yourself’ would be an utter disaster since without any real guidance or any cohesion to their thought processes, a lot of fans would spend months or even years fighting about what should happen, what has happened, and the motivations behind all of it that should be taken into account when deciding what will happen. In other words it would be a giant scrum that no one would end up winning since the pushback and compromises that continue to arise from the ‘take all comers’ attitude would be endless. To be honest the ending did feel rushed, as though the showrunners were just trying to get through it and get things wrapped up, but it wasn’t the worst ending in the world.
Fans of GoT have proven to be every bit as dedicated to the show as anyone has to any popular idea, but despite an alternate ending that might get people riled up, the truth is that like it or not, the story is over. Fan fiction might be able to take care of the parts that people didn’t like and any unanswered questions, and Martin’s books might be able to give some people some closure, but when it’s all said and done an alternate ending wouldn’t do much but offer another view of how things could have been.
