The answer is No. We don’t know if the dragons are male or female. And we also don’t know how or IF they mate.

This video also lightly touched on some dragon history and the rumor that Vermax laid a clutch of eggs in the crypts of winterfell.

  1. There is also a species of lizard (the name escapes me at the moment) that is made up of all female specimens. They reproduce by essentially dry-humping other sexually mature females to induce a type of self-fertilization. It's been a while since I've read about these lizards, so I may be fuzzy on exact details. My point is, maybe the dragons could possibly be all one gender and the coiling or other such behavior is to induce some type of self-fertilization.

  2. I think the green dragon, Rhaegal, is female in the show. They show runners have created her to be slender. Look at when Danny leaves for the wall the difference in Rhagael and Viserion's size of jaws and neck. Even her screams are a little more higher pitched. They started it in season 6 in the pits. Even their horns are different. Just a hunch Rhaegal is going to end up female and leave some up eggs. Maybe…

  3. or maybe dragon's change on the need of the species to many males a male changes to female and vice versa or perhaps they are just dragon's and don't mate they all lay eggs already fertilized but now instead of a wild birth it takes magic to hatch an egg the targaryans need the dragon's just as MUCH as the dragon's need the targaryans.one cannot exist fully without the other i believe when the dragon's bond to a rider they need that rider in order to hatch its eggs. I believe I'm on to something here also a sacrifice must be made 3 dragon's 3 people in the fire the treacherous witch who knew magic, legal Drogo, Dany also the child who was half human and half dragon stillborn have no idea if the child was in the funeral pyre with Dany and Khal Drogo the witch and the 3 eggs? maybe a blood/magic sacrifice is needed to hatch the dragon egg.

  4. I think they should be both, or neither depending on how you look at it. That any dragon would be capable of laying a clutch or fertilizing a clutch that's already been laid(like fish). I also think it'd be an interesting concept for them to prefer sexual reproduction, due to the evolutionary benefits of genetic diversity, but to be able to reproduce asexually if absolutely necessary. In that case the babies would basically just be hatched clones though.

  5. Maybe dragons have fixed sex but if not, I support the idea that their sex can be changed just like some animals you mentioned. One I recall and not mentioned in the video is salamander. 😀

  6. Before I watch, just wanna document my initial thought. I'm new to this world. But I thought about it and thought Drogon might be female due to his/her size compare to the other two. Idk just a thought since that seems to be a common difference in nature

  7. They might be all female and reproduce through parthenogenesis. But thats probably very unlikely since they would then be genetically identical to their mother, so they'd all be the same but its just a thought
