Welcome to another episode of A Song of Dan and Josh, the show where FanSided editor Josh Hill and I read through each and every chapter of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, mining each one for its thematic, dramatic and literary resonance.
And also shipping. Well, we bring it up.

This week we’re discussing Arya I from A Clash of Kings. It’s a whole new normal for the girl who will become a many-faced assassin. Roll the tape:
Some of the topics we hit include:
- Unlike on the show, we don’t know if Arya survives her close encounter with Yoren’s knife at the end of A Game of Thrones. Did Martin play dirty by keeping us dangling until the start of Clash?
- Not a ton happens in this chapter, but it’s rich in theme. Arya’s nicknames, the contrast between the real violence Yoren warns her of and the childish violence visited upon her by Hot Pie and Lommy, the red comet in the sky…all of it is pregnant with meaning.
- Is Martin trying to set up a romance between Arya and Gendry here? What about Arya and…Jon Snow? Just hear us out; we’ll explain.
We’ll be back next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. with another episode of A Song of Dan and Josh. Join us on the Winter Is Coming Facebook page! On deck: Sansa I.
