Game of Thrones came and went with Cersei Lannister being buried alive beneath King’s Landing, avoiding the highly-anticipated slaughter from Arya Stark we were promised.
After the little warrior saved Westeros and killed The Night King (played by Vladimir Furdik), suddenly it became clear there was just one more epic triumph to come from Arya (Maisie Williams) after fans recalled her prophecy told by Melisandre (Carice Van Houten) way back in season three.
‘I see a darkness in you, and in that darkness, eyes staring back at me. Brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes, eyes you’ll shut forever. We will meet again,’ stressed the Red Witch.
They met again, Arya killed the army of the dead’s blue-eyed leader and suddenly there were just two more requirements left to fulfil the prophecy.
Walder Frey (David Bradley) was arguably Arya’s most notorious kill with brown eyes and then Cersei (Lena Headey) had to be green-eyed victim, right?
Actually it appears we all overlooked a huge death and Arya had already fulfilled everything that was promised to her before season eight when she slit the throat of Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen).
In the books of George RR Martin, Petyr Baelish has ‘laughing green-grey eyes, like a cat’.
So there we go.
Among all the storylines fans couldn’t wait for which never happened was Littlefinger’s return from the dead, with thousands of theorists speculating the sneaky squirrel murdered by Arya was actually one of the Faceless Men (who never really got explained) in disguise.
Aidan Gillen first dispelled the rumour to Metro.co.uk and, despite many thinking he was calling our bluff, it turned out he was much more trust-worthy than his Game of Thrones villain, which is a huge relief for all.
Game of Thrones seasons one to eight are available to stream on NOW TV.
