Just sharing my ideas one of my favorite book series, A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin. This video may contain spoilers for those of you who are not up to date with the series. That goes for the HBO show and the books.

I’m just speculating and guessing on some ideas that I have on how future events will transpire in the series. Keep in mind however, I know nothing.

  1. So many other people in this universe are so much more malicious in their murderous actions. You are very eager to construct her as a villain. I wonder if that's because you are unable to make peace with a young girl with so much power. She is not waging war, she is not sending thousands of men to their death for profit. Martin is anti-war, I don't believe him to be entirely anti-violence. Arya like most other people in this universe is neither good nor evil. She is capable of all things because she is human. Do you understand the concept of post-modernity and how it applies to this text? There are no heroes or villains, people always exist ion a more complex spectrum than narratives of good versus evil.

  2. I agree that Arya is growing darker and will end up committing some horrible atrocity as an act of vengeance for wrongs against her family. But Needle is an indicator of a softer side of her buried deep at the moment. The GoHH saw the immense grief behind all of her murderous tendencies and I have hope that her love for Jon will pull her through somewhat. I just don't see Arya ever returning to KL. Her arc so far has been concentrated upon action in the Riverlands. Braavos is a pit stop but most of her defining moments are in the RL. There's also the rather large clue regarding Nymeria who hasn't ventured away from the RL at all. Furthermore there's no wildfire symbolism in her arc beyond this tangential reference to Summerhall. Needle, death, disguise, revenge, grief, family and wolves seem to be most prominent in her storyline.

  3. I have a better theory which goes together with yours abit. This one is going all the way to AGOT, first Arya's chapter and second Jon's. Jon's jokes get strangely prophetic:

“The Lannisters are proud,” Jon observed. “You’d think the royal sigil would be sufficient, but no. He makes his mother’s House equal in honor to the king’s.”
“The woman is important too!” Arya protested.
Jon chuckled. “Perhaps you should do the same thing, little sister. Wed Tully to Stark in your arms.”
“A wolf with a fish in its mouth?” It made her laugh. “That would look silly. Besides, if a girl can’t fight, why should she have a coat of arms?”
Jon shrugged. “Girls get the arms but not the swords. Bastards get the swords but not the arms. I did not make the rules, little sister.”
Then in ASOS, we all know what Nymeria did to Catelyn's body after the Red Wedding, don't we? A wolf pulled the fish out of the river.

And then, there's Jon's second chapter, after he gave Needle to Arya:

“Different roads sometimes lead to the same castle. Who knows?” He was feeling better now. He was not going to let himself be sad. “I better go. I’ll spend my first year on the Wall emptying chamber pots if I keep Uncle Ben waiting any longer.”

Well, the odd thing is, that is exactly what happened to Jon! He became Old Bear's steward and one of the steward's duties is to empty chamber pots! And now comes the freaky and scary thing. Arya's first chapter, the final joke of Jon.

“The show is done,” he said. He bent to scratch Ghost behind the ears. The white wolf rose and rubbed against him. “You had best run back to your room, little sister. Septa Mordane will surely be lurking.

The longer you hide, the sterner the penance. You’ll be sewing all through winter. When the spring thaw comes, they will find your body with a needle still locked tight between your frozen fingers.”
    Scary! Your thoughts?

  4. I feel like The Ghost of High Heart was speaking to all the grief that Arya had already suffered. Tragedies similar to what The Ghost herself witnessed, an entire family being wiped out due to events that were beyond her control.
Arya is a badass mainly because she's been so dedicated to her mission & her heart. The moment we meet Arya we know that she's a skilled & powerful child. (shooting that arrow over Bran's shoulder, thrashing Joffrey for being a bully, even being willing to whoop her sister for being a liar.) She's always been a girl that sticks to her convictions & her word.
Her promising to dole out justice to the many people who have harmed her family or those who stand in the way of her doling out that justice get what they deserve IMO.
I think we're glossing over the fact that in the show Arya has a moral code around who she murders that nearly gets her tossed out the House of Black & White. She's unable to be completely neutral & a part of me wonders if she'll put down killing altogether once her list & the war is over in order to go exploring west of Westeros.

  5. THANK YOU!
I've always thought that Arya may become more evil than expected. Actually, I think she has been lured into becoming a faceless man, and then become a pawn of The Great Other. But that Summer Hall – KL connection was enlightening for me, nice observation!

  6. Everyone's fucked up in GoT. Traitors, killers, rapists, incestuous twins, bastards, whores and whore-lovers, wildlings, slave owners, white walkers and more.
Judging and analyzing any character for being evil/good is pointless… so STOP!
