Avengers’ Elizabeth Olsen recalls ‘horrible’ Game Of Thrones (Picture: Getty; HBO)

Avengers star Elizabeth Olsen could have been cast as Daenerys in Game Of Thrones – if it wasn’t for her ‘horrible’ audition.

That’s right, turns out the 30-year-old thought she had a shot at becoming the Mother Of Dragons, but by the sounds of it, things didn’t go to plan.

When chatting on Live With Kelly And Ryan, the actress opened up on the ordeal.

She recalled the moment a journalist asked if an audition ever went wrong, and the star laughed: ‘I was like , “I actually really love auditioning, so I can’t really think of anything”, and [then] I was like, “Oh that’s right, I auditioned for Game of Thrones.”‘

Elizabeth continued: ‘It was for Khaleesi – she was just burned alive and then I start making this huge speech.

‘I was in the smallest room with the casting director, they didn’t even have a reader, and that was the furthest I ever got. It was that bad. It was horrible.

‘I was like, “This is uncomfortable for me, I’m sure it’s awkward for her (casting director), no one’s going to enjoy this experience.”‘

The star then joked that she should have stopped the audition there and then, and asked to be called back later – for a different role!

Elizabeth isn’t the only person who missed out on appearing in the fantasy epic, as Mark Strong also could have been cast.

The 56-year-old spoke to Metro.co.uk about potentially being in the saga – but was too coy to reveal which character he was offered.

He told us: ‘I was offered a role in it but I can’t ever say who it was.

‘Because I don’t want to belittle the person who eventually did it because they may have no idea they weren’t first choice.’

Asked if he turned the role down, Mark added: ‘No it came my way and we were flirting a while with it, but I didn’t have to turn it down.’

Game of Thrones seasons one to eight are available to stream on NOW TV.
