In the opinion of Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, and blogs around the world, there are only two pieces of pop culture that matter this year so far: Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones. Newly announced nominations for MTV’s Movie and TV Awards confirm those beliefs.
Avengers: Endgame and Game of Thrones racked up top nominations for this year’s awards ceremony. Endgame picked up several nominations for Best Movie, Best Hero (Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron-Man), Best Villain (Josh Brolin as Thanos), and Best Fight (Captain America vs. Thanos). Game of Thrones also picked up four nominations, including Best TV Show, Best Performance in a Show (Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen), Best Hero (Maisie Williams as Arya Stark), and Best Fight (Arya Stark vs. the White Walkers).
Sure, there are other nominees — Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg also earned a nomination for Best Hero and Best Fight (RBG vs. inequality) — but it’s clear that this year’s awards show is all about the aforementioned pop culture mammoths. As it should be! Sure, Ginsburg has fought for decades to make the United States of America a better place for hundreds of millions of people to live, but did she concoct a plan to stop Thanos from snapping half of the universe’s population into nothingness? Exactly.
The MTV Movie and TV Awards, easily the second-most prestigious of all the entertainment awards shows held in June, are a glimpse into Hollywood’s upcoming accolade season this year. Avengers and Game of Thrones are both ending after years of entertaining us — most conventional awards shows are going to acknowledge them. Endgame will pick up some visual effects Oscars, and Game of Thrones will take home an Emmy or Golden Globe, so in many ways, the early recognition from the MTV Movie and TV Awards can be see as a trailblazer in this regard.
If you’re one of the few people who don’t care for Game of Thrones or Avengers: Endgame, don’t worry. MTV is also ensuring that shows like Jersey Shore: Family Vacation get the awards show attention they deserve. It’s nominated for “Reality Royalty,” a new category dedicated to shows about real people in real, everyday situations.
