That scene with Tyrion and Oberyn is a perfect example of the brilliance of the writers. It's not quite the same circumstances in the books but it served the same purpose. They needed to consign Oberyn fighting for Tyrion. So they steeped the relationship in history, and revelation, and compassion and injustice, and hope. Most of all hope. Not just for Tyrion, but that justice and truth just might win for once.
