With just weeks to go until the Bafta TV Awards take place, another important awards ceremony has been held to honour the very best in the industry in fields including makeup, costume design and visual effects.

The Bafta TV Craft Awards 2023 came around on Sunday April 23, with former Great British Bake Off presenter Mel Giedroyc hosting the glitzy affair.

The two top winners veered from dragon-filled fantasy to medical drama, with Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon and dark comedy This Is Going To Hurt taking home three prizes each.

House of the Dragon, which stars actors including Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith and Milly Alcock in the cast, won the awards for make-up and hair design; sound: fiction and special; and visual and graphic effects.

This Is Going To Hurt, which saw Ben Whishaw portray real-life doctor Adam Kay in a series based on his memoir of the same name, won for scripted casting; editing; and best writer: drama, with the latter gong marking Adam’s first ever win.

Another notable winner of the night was the coverage of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral, which won for sound: factual; and director: multi-camera.

The historic event featured commentary from esteemed presenters including Huw Edwards, Kirsty Young and David Dimbleby, who came out of retirement to provide commentary for the BBC on the day last September.

Strictly Come Dancing picked up the accolade for entertainment craft team, while Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee was recognised in the writer: comedy category.

The Tinder Swindler, Top Boy, The Essex Serpent and Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story also received awards at the ceremony, as did Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes, Children of the Taliban and Bad Sisters.

Meanwhile, Alison Barnett was the recipient of the Television Craft Special Award for her trailblazing position as one of the first women to be a head of production in the UK TV industry.
