He's half wight and he can't cross the wall because there's magic holding it that's why the white walkers never crossed either. Even he went with Jon they would've caught up with them most likely so Benjen stays back to distract the wights to let Jon go. It's called logic people use your brain a little

I though Benjen would have been an awesome character instead they threw him under a rug, everyone kept going on about the remaining Starks but kept forgetting that he is also a fucking Stark! Even Roberts Rebellion he has no relevance when he was the only other Stark left besides Ned.

Benjin rode in because he knew Jon was going to do a monumentally stupid thing, that is, remain and kill a few exrea wights rather than take off with Drogon. I suppose D and D could say a major character died in this episode.
