Prince Baelor Targaryen (Bertie Carvel) is about to become one of your favorite characters on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and it’s all because he actually gives a damn about the truth. When Dunk (Peter Claffey) stumbles into the Prince of Dragonstone’s presence trying to verify that Ser Arlan (Danny Webb) was actually a knight of note, Baelor doesn’t dismiss him—he remembers.
And he remembers exactly. Bertie Carvel broke down what makes this moment so powerful, and his explanation reveals why Prince Baelor stands out in a world of scheming nobles and self-serving lords.

Carvel’s interpretation reveals why heroes value accuracy and honesty
A leader who actually cares about the truth
The heart of Baelor’s character comes down to something deceptively simple: he values accuracy. “I suppose the truth matters,” Carvel told Decider, before noting that the scene with Dunk works as a crucial test for the hedge knight. When Dunk claims he and Ser Arlan broke seven lances, Baelor gently corrects him—it was four. Not seven. The precision matters because precision speaks to character.
“But yeah, the truth matters and he does remember and he remembers in detail and that’s who he is,” Carvel explained. In an age of spin, half-truths, and political maneuvering, Prince Baelor’s insistence on accuracy is genuinely moving. “And again, you know, these are heroic qualities in our day and age. How nice to be reminded that there are leaders for whom details matter and so does the truth.”

The danger and morality of choosing right in the moment
What makes Carvel’s portrayal particularly compelling is his understanding that Baelor doesn’t know beforehand what he’s going to do when Dunk arrives.
“It’s so interesting hearing people talk about these stories as history and that these things are known. But in the moment that they happen, they’re not known. And that’s true of our world, too, isn’t it? Each of us has to decide from one minute to the next how we’re going to behave. That’s what gives our choices a moral dimension that we could go either way. That he chooses what we might regard as to do the right thing is moving precisely because he might not.”
Carvel focuses on the present moment rather than backstory because that’s where the character’s true complexity lives. Baelor could dismiss Dunk outright, but instead, he chooses kindness and honesty.
