The soul gem makes the most sense for the story to have a spirit/soul realm, and also as a perfect transition into infinity war.

Hope it ties in well to the whole MCU.

I don't think the film needs the soul gem for ppl to go see the movie but rather it's in the movie for story purposes.

This video just got me more excited for the next two years. 2017 has been my year of films and now it seems 2018 will be the extended version.
