Fantasy author Brandon Sanderson claims that he was the perfect one to write Elden Ring and not the Game of Thrones famed author, George R.R. Martin. He wasn’t happy with From Software’s choice to pick Martin over him. He had discussed this topic in his podcast Intentionally Blank and even had co-presenter Dan Wells joining him.

Was It All a Joke?

Sanderson should have been the last person to be upset about this fact since his highly acclaimed Mistborn novels already got a Fortnite crossover back on May 21. Fortnite is one of the most popular games of this century with more than millions of players.

So, he is packed with work and such a disappointment isn’t justifiable. Well, we know that it was all in fun and Sanderson and obviously joking but to some, it was shocking. Apart from Mistborn, Sanderson has the hit fantasy series, The Stormlight Archive.

It was he who finished the unfinished part of the Wheel of Time series as the original author, Robert Jordan suddenly died in 2007. Sanderson initially helped Jordan as a co-author to the last three parts, but after the sudden demise, he had to take the charge.

During the live recording of the podcast, a member of the audience asked about his excitement level since he can see one of his fictional characters featured on some other property. He first started by telling about how Kelsier from Mistborn will be seen in Fortnite and then proceeded to talk about the Elden Ring.

“From Software decides to make a fantasy game and partner with a fantasy novelist, right? And they choose someone who spends his days blogging about the NFL, rather than the person who has played their games since King’s Field, and has listed their games among his top 10 consistently over time? What are you thinking, people? If you don’t know, they went to George and made a game with George, and I’m like, George doesn’t play video games. George has no idea. So anyway, there you go.”

Now, Sanderson is a very successful writer who has been a fan of From Software’s work ever since the company released King’s Field games. On the other hand, Martin said that he is a video game addict and hardly plays any game but the aesthetics and the details of From Software’s work.

Brandon Sanderson didn’t criticize it; the entire thing was a joke. He respects Martin’s work as a writer.
