Over the years, there have been countless attempts at making a perfect Cinderella movie, whether it’s a heavy-hitting Disney movie or an independent picture. The next rendition of the classic fairy tale is a fun movie musical from Amazon Prime Video that sees chart-topping singer and former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello step into the titular role for her movie debut. Judging by the official trailer, we’re in for a lot more than the traditional fairy tale we all know and love.

Written by Kay Cannon (Pitch Perfect), Cinderella also stars big names like Idina Menzel, Minnie Driver, Nicholas Galitzine, Billy Porter and Pierce Brosnan. There’s plenty of singing prowess in this line-up as well as acting talent — it is a musical, after all. And yes, James Corden makes an appearance because apparently there’s no escaping him these days. Watch the trailer:

As you tell from the trailer, this version takes a different approach to the classic character. For example, Cinderella isn’t convinced she’d enjoy life as a Princess. Instead, she yearns to run her own shop, named “Dresses by Ella.” The whole thing is bursting with colors and catchy music. No doubt we’re in for a fun ride.

How this version of Cinderella is different from Disney

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Cannon explained what makes this version of the unique unique. “I was just always looking for, ‘What are the classic tropes, and how can I turn them on their heads?’ The biggest change is in Cinderella and [Nicholas Galitzine’s] Prince, because Cinderella’s like the alpha in this story and our Prince is a beta, and that’s not normally the case — or, he evolves,” she said. “In this story, everybody around Cinderella learns something from her and changes.”

I just felt like it was a great opportunity to show this loved, iconic character that is Cinderella in a way that’s more relatable to what girls and young women in particular are going through, where they can really see themselves.

Cinderella was originally meant to release in movie theaters, but plans changed thanks to the pandemic. Will it still be successful? Will the slipper fit? Find out when it premieres exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on September 3.
