The bulk of filming on Game of Thrones happens at Titanic Studios in Belfast, Northern Ireland, so it’s common to see cast members hopping in and out of there. Case in point: Carice van Houten (Melisandre) was in town over the weekend, something we know thanks to an image she posted to her Instagram account this past weekend. Notice that the road sign says “Belfast”:
According to Spanish site Los Siete Reinos, van Houten posted this photo to her Instagram Stories page, meaning it was auto-deleted within 24 hours after upload. Happily, someone took a screen grab for posterity, and here we are. It’s sources have confirmed that this sign is indeed outside Belfast.
Melisandre may have left Westeros for Essos in season 7, but she hinted to Varys that she’d be back. “Oh, I will return dear Spider,” she told Varys in “The Queen’s Justice,” creepily. “One last time. I have to die in this strange country, just like you.”
That said, we haven’t seen much of van Houten on set. The only other time we’ve caught wind of her was from an Instagram post very much like this one that put her near Linen Mill Studios near Corbet-Banbridge. So far, van Houten herself has stayed out of sight, which probably means she’s filming on interior sets at places like Titanic Studios.
That said, Belfast is only a couple dozen miles from Magheramorne Quarry, where the crew is currently filming a large-scale sequence involving the Dothraki, the Unsullied, a Northern army, and the army of the dead. That seems like the kind of party Melisandre would want to attend.
