The wait for George R.R. Martin‘s next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series has been excruciatingly long. The Winds of Winter has been more than a decade in the making, but there are still no signs of it ever coming to your hands any time soon. However, we’ve had glimpses of what we might see, if it actually arrives. About 12 years ago, in an interview, Martin revealed some of the key locations in which his story will be set in the book.
Quick read:
- The Winds of Winter has been delayed for over a decade with no release date.
- George R.R. Martin hinted that Highgarden and Casterly Rock will play key roles.
- He expressed interest in writing more stories set in Westeros beyond A Song of Ice and Fire
Fans can expect more of Highgarden and Casterly Rock
About 12 years ago, George R.R. Martin received a renewed sense of interest in his books from the fans, once Game of Thrones began to soar new heights with its third season. The popularity also came with a lot of expectations, particularly with Martin’s next book in the series, The Winds of Winter. In an old interview with TIFF, Martin discussed some locations that would be explored in the still-awaited book:
“You know the story takes over. The story makes its own demands. There are other parts of Westeros that you will see in the last few books. I mean, I haven’t board an action to the Casterly Rock yet. You’ve never seen Casterly Rock, you’ve never seen Highgarden. I think both of those locations will play key roles and in the books to come.”
Martin wanted to explore more of Westeros after ending ASOIAF
George R.R. Martin is already so behind schedule that it makes fans wonder if he will actually ever finish the rest of the books. However, the author once had plans to go beyond A Song of Ice and Fire and write stories about other places in Westeros. He revealed,
“The world that I’ve created is rich enough to sustain many stories and the Song of Ice and Fire is only one of those stories. So, if I finish these last two books, that will be the end of the story, but not necessarily the end of the world. I think I would probably want to do something else after I finish that. Something very different and maybe some short stories…
Assuming that, of course, I live long enough and keep writing, I might return and tell all the stories set in Westeros. At different parts of Westeros, different historical epics or different continents and geography. So that might be fun.”
