The final season of Game of Thrones is ever closer and by this point you’re all probably waiting for a trailer, if the threads of any and all tweets from the official Thrones and HBO account are anything to go by. I’m afraid we’re not there yet, but we must be pretty close, because HBO just released the traditional character posters for season eight! Also, Twitter emojis for each of the characters, because it’s 2019. So, let’s go! For the Throne!
For this final time, the character posters go full circle, following the familiar pattern of the first season’s marketing campaign, in which we saw our characters, most prominently Ned Stark, sitting on the Iron Throne. This time, the posters feature Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Cersei Lannister, Jaime Lannister, Tyrion Lannister, Arya Stark, Sansa Stark, Bran Stark, Brienne of Tarth, Davos Seaworth, Theon Greyjoy, Euron Greyjoy, Grey Worm, Jorah Mormont, Melisandre, Missandei, Sam Tarly, Varys, Sandor Clegane, and the Night King; all of them on the Iron Throne:
You may notice a few key absences. Though some relatively major characters have never gotten individual posters before, others certainly have. Missing are Bronn, Yara, Tormund, Gilly, Gendry, and Qyburn, as well as a few more tertiary characters. Though posters for the likes of Gilly and Qyburn weren’t expected, others have been featured in the marketing for previous seasons, such as Tormund. Does that mean Tormund plays a smaller role, that his life is cut short, or just that there are too many posters already?
As for Twitter’s character emojis, each of the characters featured above got one. You can see them all here, in high resolution, or in the capture below for a quick look:
So this is it! I know we’re all waiting for the trailer, and this is as good a clue as any that it may be coming soon, as the characters posters are usually followed by a trailer soon enough. Keep your eyes peeled, and, meanwhile, enjoy the new costumes!
