Charlie Brooker has offered his thoughts on Game Of Thrones’ final season, praising the showrunners for doing a ‘good job’ in wrapping up the show.

The eighth and final season came to a controversial close last month, with many fans irked by the rushed transformation of characters and who ended up on the Iron Throne.

Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker has since weighed-in with his verdict, explaining how showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff had a difficult job to pull off.

Speaking to NME, Brooker said: ‘There was a thread I saw that summed up the difference between a seat-of-the-pants writer and a plotter, and George RR Martin is a seat-of-the-pants writer, creating complicated characters and scenarios and it’s hard to bring those stories to a resolution, hence why the books are slowing down in frequency.

‘The producers of the show have this story created by a seat-of-the-pants writer but they decide they have to bring it to a conclusion, which presents a problem, because characters in plotter stories tend to be a bit thinner.

‘It felt to me like there were romances, for instance, that were built in because they had to happen for the purposes of the story.’

After saying how the final episode reminded him of early seasons, he added: ‘So overall, with the situation they were in, they did a good job.’

Asked if he’d score the season a very specific 68 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, Charlie joked: ‘About that, yes.’

The show’s final season stands at 58 per cent on the reviews aggregate site, so Charlie’s slightly above the critical consensus if you were wondering.

The final season came under scrutiny for many reasons (including a bizarre coffee cup fiasco), with show director Miguel Sapochnik recently defending the transformation of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in the final episodes.

Filming on a show spin-off, provisionally titled Bloodmoon, kicked off in Ireland earlier this month – starring Naomi Watts, Miranda Richardson, and John Simm.
