If you’re a ’90s kid, then you’ve most likely seen and/or been scarred by the killer doll Chucky. As a ’90s kid myself, I remember him instilling in me a fear of dolls that persists to this day.
That said, there’s a reason people love horror: it’s thrilling. And as frightened as I was of Chucky back in the day, I’m still looking forward to SYFY and USA’s upcoming Chucky series.
We already know that the original voice of Chucky, Brad Dourif, will reprise his role as the infamous killer doll. Now, Deadline reports on a couple more people joining in. To start, Jennifer Tilly will return to voice Tiffany Valentine, who was first introduced in 1998’s Bride of Chucky. Moral of that movie? Even killer dolls can find love.
Final Destination star Devon Sawa is also joining the cast, but his role is being kept under wraps like this is the MCU or something.
The show will also four teenage leads played by Zackary Arthur (Transparent), Teo Briones (Ratched), Alyvia Alyn Lind (Daybreak), and Björgvin Arnarson (The Seventh Day). Check out their character descriptions below:
- Loner Jake Webber (Arthur) is still processing his mother’s death, which makes him the perfect target for Chucky.
- Jake’s cousin Junior Webber (Briones) is outgoing and the opposite of Jake in every way.
- Lexy Taylor (Lind) is Junior’s unbearable girlfriend and one of the school bullies.
- Finally, Devon Lopez (Arnarson) can’t get enough of true crime stories, and will naturally find himself pulled towards mysterious killings likely involving Chucky.
What will the Chucky series be about?
The series will be set in a quiet, picturesque little town that will be turned upside down after a Chucky doll shows up at a local yard sale. A string of murders soon follows, naturally. The show will also aim to take a harder look at the killer doll’s origins.
Franchise creator Dan Mancini spoke to SYFY Wire last year about the series. He said their mission is “to preserve the straightforward scariness of the original film or the first couple of films.”
But at the same time, continue on with this ever-expanding tapestry of consistent story that we’ve spun over the course of seven movies and 30-some years. I think fans are really gonna love to see the new characters that we introduce into this realm and just to see how they came off of our classic characters. Not just Chucky, but some of the others that you may be hoping to see. There’s a good chance they may turn up.
As far as who some of these returning characters may be? There’s a huge list, including but not limited to Andy Barclay (the kid who Chucky wished to transfer his soul into so he could be “a real boy”) or even Detective Mike Norris, who refused to believe the Barclay family when they approached him about Chucky but soon learned the horrible, frightening truth. There is a vast library of characters that could return, so we’ll have to wait and see what goes down when the series eventually premieres!
