Fans of A Song of Ice and Fire used to congregate each year at the Con of Thrones to express their devotion to Westeros. The gathering was forced to be canceled not once, but twice because of the rising pandemic. As the first coronavirus outbreak swept the globe in 2020, it was initially postponed. In 2021, the fan event was once more postponed in order to stop the virus from spreading. Unfortunately, it has been canceled once again, but for reasons other than a raging pandemic.

Con of Thrones canceled due to anti-humanitarian legislation
The news recently arrived on the Con of Thrones official website, which stated:
“We’ve made the difficult decision to cancel Con of Thrones 2023. Due to the increasingly anti-humanitarian legislation and atmosphere in Florida and based on additional feedback from partners, attendees, and guests, it has become clear that if we were to proceed, Con of Thrones 2023 would not be the level of event that the community expects and deserves.”

All the attendees to receive refunds
The Hyatt Regency Orlando in Orlando, Florida was supposed to host this year’s event from August 25 to 27, however, that has since changed. Fans who have already bought tickets or add-on activities will get an email with alternatives for refunds and transfers. Hotel reservations made in the past will be immediately revoked.
The “anti-humanitarian legislation and atmosphere” most likely point to several anti-LGBTQIA+ and anti-racist bills that were being discussed among legislators in Florida under Governor Ron DeSantis, including prohibitions on gender-affirming healthcare, criminal penalties for trans people who use bathrooms that correspond to their gender, limitations on the subjects that college students are allowed to study, and more.
