Ten years have passed since HBO’s initial airing of Game of Thrones. The graphic scenery throughout the presentation was simply stunning. Northern Ireland serves as the primary site for the majority of the franchise’s filming. Nevertheless, Croatia served as the location for several of the memorable sequences. Croatia is seeing a significant increase in Game of Thrones tourism as a result of the prequel House of The Dragon becoming such a huge success.

Dubrovnik is overloaded with Game of Thrones fans

The vacation home rental company Holidu recently published a report on the most “over-touristed” cities in Europe, and Croatia’s Dubrovnik—which has gained a lot of tourism traction in recent years thanks to it being one of the main filming locations for the HBO hit show Game of Thrones—came out on top, surpassing the likes of Venice by quite a margin. According to the research, there are 36 tourists per local resident in Dubrovnik.

Effects of Over-tourism on Dubrovnik

Overtourism has generated numerous problems in the Croatian city, ranging from traffic jams to infrastructure degradation and a sharp spike in pricing, as well as a decreased quality of life for residents. Dubrovnik, on the other hand, has been attempting to contain the problem through various norms and restrictions. In 2017, for example, in response to a UNESCO suggestion, the city made an effort to enforce daily tourist limitations and placed 116 cameras to count the amount of tourists entering the Old Town.
