George R.R. Martin recently appeared on a podcast to discuss “Game of Thrones” and fan culture in general, but an offhand remark he made about another TV show has raised the hackles of one of that show’s exec producers.
Appearing on Leonard Maltin’s “Maltin on Movies” podcast, the author discussed the pressure he feels about writing the final two books in his Song of Ice and Fire series, on which “Game of Thrones” is based — and, by extension, the pressure he feels as one of that show’s exec producers to give viewers a satisfying conclusion.
“I want to give them something terrific,” Martin told Maltin.

“What if I f**k it up at the end? What if I do a ‘Lost’?” he added, describing the much-maligned “Lost” finale. “They’ll come after me with pitchforks and torches.”
Earlier in the discussion, Martin admitted he watched “Lost” each week “trying to figure it out, and as it got deeper and deeper, I kept saying, ‘They better have something good in mind for the end. This better pay off here.’ And then I felt so cheated when we got to the conclusion.”

While Martin sidestepped over the irony that millions of “Game of Thrones” fans weren’t exactly thrilled with that finale, “Lost” exec producer Damon Lindelof clapped back via Instagram to basically remind him that those who live in glass Westeros castles shouldn’t be throwing stones.
So what does Martin have to say about Lindelof’s clapback? In a recent interview with MTV News, he admitted he wasn’t aware of Lindelof’s remark until he was given a rundown.
“I don’t know exactly what’s been said but I did have problems with the ending of ‘Lost’ but that was after watching ‘Lost’ religiously for however many years it was on. We watched it every week. It was one of our favourite shows on television,” he said, emphasizing he’s still a fan of the show.

“As disappointed as I was with the ending, there’s no doubt how much I loved everything before that,” he added. “And the acting and the writing on that show was amazing.”
