Before production for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms went underway, author and creator George R.R. Martin had one specific ask for the role of Egg. He wanted the actor to be bald or ready to shave his head so that the scenes looked authentic.

The story of Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg is quite unique. A hedge knight along with a runaway kid traversing across Westeros, collecting a bunch of interesting anecdotes along the way. The books written by Martin provide an insight into the on-ground adventures of these two characters, away from the flashy war for reign as seen in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.

Dexter Sol Ansell was fully committed to play Egg

As young as Dexter Sol Ansell is, one would believe he is just entering the industry with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. However, that’s far from true. The actor has been a part of a few shows earlier along with the major Hunger Games franchise before joining the world of Game of Thrones.

Once he knew he was auditioning for this role, Ansell was fully committed to playing Egg and wanted to look authentic on screen. This is why he did not even think twice before shaving off his head. In fact, when he went to the audition with his mother, he went in with a razor, ready to show his commitment to playing the part. He said in the recent official GOT podcast episode,

“We were going to go in the audition with a razor and we were going to shave my hair. … We were thinking and we were like, ‘I don’t think we should do this because what if you don’t get the role, Dexter? Then what are you going to do with a bald head? … I’m a bald head and I haven’t got a role.’”

The fearlessness and the dedication to bring Egg to life was burning within Ansell. It translated well on screen too as we see him prove his range and mettle episode after episode. Fans cannot wait to see how Ansell brings more nuanced aspects of his role to screen, once his true identity is revealed.

In A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, it was very important to have Egg shave his head since his true identity would be revealed if he hadn’t done that. For the people who read the books and know who Egg truly is, would know how anyone in Westeros would recognize him with his full head of hair.

Moreover, shaving his head was the perfect way to blend into the common crowd of the kingdom and evade guards who were looking for their lost prince.
