In fact, Ansell was sure that Claffey was the perfect Dunk even when they met for the first time, as he shared on the podcast, “Me and Peter, actually, at the first auditions I did, I was with lots of Dunks, and Peter, Dunk, he was my favorite and I really wanted him to get the role. We had a good bond with each other. And off camera and on camera, we worked great.” He added that the two bonded during trips to the arcade and visits to Five Guys.

Dexter Sol Ansell on why Egg seeks out Dunk in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

The core of this Game of Thrones prequel series is the relationship between Dunk and Egg. They first met when Dunk stopped by for some food while on his way to Ashford Meadow. Egg had offered to squire for him, and Dunk had outright declined him. That did not deter Egg, who somehow managed to reach Ashford Meadow and once again insisted that Dunk let him squire. This time, Dunk agreed and the two have stuck together since.

Referencing this, one of the podcast hosts asked Ansell why Egg was so insistent on becoming a squire to Dunk. He replied, “He literally does not care at first, and he’s like, ‘Oh, I’m coming with you.’ And Dunk goes up, and he’s like, ‘I’m just gonna go with you.’ He has no clue how he’s gonna be yet, and then he makes a good bond with him.”

The eleven-year-old explained that one of the most emotional Dunk and Egg scenes is in episode 3, where they cook and enjoy sandwiches together. He emphasized that it was a pivotal moment for their relationship.
