It has been a long road for Brienne of Tarth, in Game of Thrones. She became a Kingsgaurd for Renly Baratheon only to watch him die when a shadow monster slit his throat. She then swore an oath to serve Lady Catelyn Stark and did her bidding by attempting to return Jaime Lannister to his family at King’s Landing. Along the way, she was beaten, almost raped, and had to fight a bear while wearing a pink dress.
But it wasn’t all bad for the Maid of Tarth. She did eventually see Jaime Lannister returned to King’s Landing (sans a hand), and then was given a Valyrian steel sword by Ser Jaime (one of two that was reforged from Ned Stark’s Valyrian steel greatsword, Ice), armored in the finest armor Lannister gold could by, then sent on a quest to find and protect Lady Catelyn’s daughters, Sansa an Arya.
On that journey, she was given a squire named Podrick — even though she wasn’t a knight — and she trained him as best she could. She happened upon Arya once, and almost had her, but then had to defeat the Hound in one-on-one combat, which is something no one had done. Finally, Brienne found Sansa and pledged to serve her. Since then, she has been the Lady of Winterfell’s most loyal confidant, even serving as her proxy in King’s Landing during the meeting at the Dragonpit.
However, Brienne was no knight, and so while the men in her profession her being called “Ser,” she was still called “Lady,” which is something she probably got used to. Well, in tonight’s episode, Brienne was knighted by Jaime Lannister, as the two were drinking wine and swapping stories with other defenders of Winterfell.
It was an amazing moment for fans of Brienne, and for the character herself. It was also great to see Podrick’s face as it happened. I wonder if Brienne will knight him before the Battle of Winterfell in Episode 803?
Jaime Lannister came to Winterfell to fight for the living and correct the mistakes of his past. And, after offering to serve under her as she defends the left side of Winterfell — and carrying on a conversation where he didn’t once insult her — he finally did the right thing and made her Brienne of Tarth, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms…because “Any knight can make a knight.”
I’m not crying, you’re crying.
