Already sitting pretty at the heart of the Superman and Witcher fandoms, Henry Cavill looks set to add yet another beloved franchise to his resume: Mass Effect, the popular sci-fi video game series from BioWare.
Cavill posted a picture to his Instagram of himself being fitted for his Witcher wig while holding several pages of paper. The text is too blurry to read. “Secret project?” he wrote in the caption. “Or just a handful of paper with random words on it…. Guess you’ll have to wait and see.”
However, there’s no mystery that the internet can’t solve. The brilliant staff over at Gamepressure used software from Focus Magic to unblur the text on Cavill’s papers. While it’s not perfect, they managed to make out several words that can only be referring to Mass Effect, including “Geth,” “Reaper,”” Cerberus,” and “Tali’Zorah.” From there, Gamepressure ascertained that the text was the same as the plot description for Mass Effect 3 featured on Wikipedia.
Cavill is a huge fan of PC gaming and was determined to land his role on The Witcher after falling in love with The Witcher 3 from CD Projekt Red. If anyone in Hollywood would be making a play to land the role of Commander Shepard in a Mass Effect adaptation, it’s him.
How likely is it that Henry Cavill is actually involved in a Mass Effect movie or TV show?
We’ve seen a considerable increase in video game adaptations across television and cinema in recent years, with The Witcher perhaps being the most successful so far. Notably, the quality of these projects has generally been high compared to the efforts seen in the 1990s and 2000s. With Mass Effect being one of the most popular video game franchises out there, it’s long been speculated that Commander Shepard would be making the transition from the SSV Normandy to the film set.
However, with the Mass Effect Legendary Edition ready to come to consoles and PC on May 14, the most likely possibility is that Cavill is involved with that. Perhaps he’s working as a voice actor, or maybe he’s been enlisted to help promote the game in a commercial or something. Also, a new game in the franchise was teased earlier this year to hugely positive feedback from fans, particularly those left underwhelmed by Mass Effect: Andromeda.
With the long-awaited remasters on the horizon, a new game in the works, and now the addition of Henry Cavill to the universe, things are finally looking up for Mass Effect fans. With the year barely begun, both BioWare and EA are likely to have many more surprises in store, even if we have to use Focus Magic to find out what they are!
