The National Treasure TV series is FINALLY happening, folks! For all the hardcore fans like myself who have been waiting for news, today is a glorious day. According to Deadline, Disney+ has officially greenlit a National Treasure series.
Mira Nair (A Suitable Boy) is set to direct the 10-episode first season, which will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Unfortunately, Nicolas Cage will not be a part of it, however, the series is going in an interesting direction worth getting excited about. Exploring topics such as identity, patriotism, and community, The new National Treasure series will explore topics like identity, patriotism and community, and be told from the point of view of a new Latina character, 20-year-old DREAMer* Jess Morales.
Alongside her group of diverse friends, Jess will head off on the classic National Treasure type of adventure to locate a lost treasure and learn more about her family’s history. As of this writing, no one has been cast in the role of Jess, so we’ll have to keep our eyes and ears open to see who takes on that task.
With the National Treasure series officially gaining traction, fans are also curious about any updates on the franchise’s third film, which has been in talks for just as long as the series has. There’re no big updates to report as yet, but given that the series is finally moving forward, perhaps that will change soon!
What is the National Treasure franchise about?
If you’re a newbie to this franchise, then let me give you a brief synopsis. The movies follow Cage’s character, Benjamin Franklin Gates, an expert historian who unravels America’s craziest hidden secrets. And boy, is it one heck of a fun ride.
Here’s hoping we’ll have some news on the movie front soon. In the meantime, we’ll look forward to the series!
*What is a Dreamer? When it comes to immigration reform, a “Dreamer” (often also spelled “DREAMer”) refers to an immigrant youth who qualifies for the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act.
