Game of Thrones star Ian Gelder may have played a Lannister in HBO’s high-fantasy epic, but he relished taking the part of a real villain in the newest episode of Doctor Who.
Featured in the seventh episode of the 12th season, the actor (who also appeared in Who spin-off Torchwood back in the day) said that taking on the mysterious role (his name in the episode is still yet to be revealed) was a pleasure.
‘Any actor will tell you that playing a villain is always great! But this one was so extraordinary,’ he told the BBC.
‘The first I knew about it was from talking to the costume designer who sent me designs of what the character would look like.
He continued: ‘I thought how exciting that I’m going to look so extraordinary and so evil and chilling! So I went into it being really excited.’
Ian also revealed that it was a pleasure to work with Jodie Whittaker, with who he will no doubt be sparring against as another enemy for the Doctor and her ‘fam’ to defeat.
‘I had a lot of big scenes with Jodie and she’s what’s written on the tin in a kind of way,’ Ian revealed.
‘She’s everything that you expect her to be, she’s delightful, funny, energetic, committed and we worked together really well.’
A synopsis of Can You Hear Me? – which airs tomorrow – reveals that fans will go on a time-travelling adventure from ancient Syria to modern-day Sheffield.
‘Something is stalking the Doctor and her friends. As Graham, Yaz and Ryan return home to see friends and family, they find themselves haunted by very different experiences. Who is the figure calling from beyond the stars for help, and why?
And what are the fearsome Chagaskas terrorising Aleppo in 1380? To find the answers, Team TARDIS must embark on a mission which forces them to face their darkest fears.’
Colour us intrigued indeed. And if you thought that that was it, well we have one more surprise for you.
Ian also revealed that the episode would be ‘scary, thought-provoking and exciting.’

Doctor Who continues Sunday 9 February at 9pm on BBC One.
