Who is the biggest dragon in House of the Dragon? (Picture: HBO)

*Warning: Contains spoilers for House of the Dragon.*

House of the Dragon roared towards the finish line of its second season with a pulsating penultimate episode on Monday morning.

The Game of Thrones prequel might have more incest and more grisly murders than you could shake a stick at, but it’s the dragons that have really stolen show.

And the latest episodes have brought the winged beasts right into the centre of the story, as the Dance of the Dragons rams up and prepares to boil over.

But with so many dragons now in the show, it’s understandable that viewers at home are having a little trouble separating their Syraxes from their Vermithors.

To that end, we’ve compiled a list of every dragon in House of the Dragon – alive, dead, or not yet seen – so you don’t have to go far on your factfinding mission.

So, which dragon in House of the Dragon is the biggest? And what are they all called? And who is each dragon’s rider? Here’s everything you need to know…

Vhagar

Vhagar is an old dragon – the oldest and biggest by far (Picture: HBO)

Age: 180 years old

Size: Absolutely massive, the biggest dragon in Westeros

Rider: Prince Aemond Targaryen, the Prince Regent

Vhagar is an old gal who has seen some things. Born before the Westerosi calendar was reset by Aegon the Conqueror, she was once the dragon of Visenya Targaryen. Vhagar was eventually claimed by Leana Velaryon, wife to Daemon Targaryen.

When Laena knew she was about to die in childbirth, she walked out to Vhagar and begged to be given a death by fire. Vhagar was then riderless until she was claimed by Prince Aemond on Driftmark shortly after Laena’s funeral. Since then, Vhagar has been ridden into battle by Aemond.

Vermithor (Warning: Spoilers!)

Hugh the Hammer claimed Vermithor in the latest House of the Dragon episode (Picture: HBO)

Age: Approx. 100 years old

Size: Oh, a ginormous boy to be sure!

Rider: Hugh the Hammer

We saw Hugh the Hammer tame Vermithor in the penultimate episode of season two of House of the Dragon. Before that, we saw Vermithor toast about a dozen potential dragonriders as Rhaenyra Targaryen watched on.

There’s no telling what Vermithor will do when unleashed on the battlefield.

Sheepstealer (Warning: Book spoilers!)

We’re not saying anything… (Picture: HBO)

Age: 80 years old

Size: On TV? Unknown. In the books? A mighty fellow!

Rider: N/A… for now.

Look, we’re not going to say too much just yet. But, if you really don’t want to know, this is your final spoiler warning.

In Fire and Blood, the book upon which House of the Dragon is based, a girl called Nettles tames wild dragon Sheepstealer.

In House of the Dragon, Nettles doesn’t seem to exist. In fact, it appears that Daemon and Laena’s daughter, Rhaena Targaryen, is going to be moved into Nettles’ position. Rhaena has been chasing a wild dragon in the Vale for a few episodes now.

We’ll leave it at that.

Silverwing (Warning: Spoilers!)

Ulf the White is having the time of his life right now… (Picture: HBO)

Age: Approx. 90 years old

Size: Oh, huge. Don’t mess with her.

Rider: Ulf the White (somehow)

Silverwing is one of the oldest dragons in the show and we’ve finally got to meet her! In the first episode of season two, Cregan Stark told Jacaerys Velaryon that a dragon once refused to fly beyond the Wall many years ago… that was Silverwing!

And now Ulf the White owns her. Known for being a bit of a drunkard, and for embellishing the details of his family tree, Ulf now has command over one of the oldest beasts in the land. Good luck to her!

Dreamfyre

You’ll remember Dreamfyre from the very first House of the Dragon (Picture: HBO)

Age: Approx. 100 years old

Size: Yep, she’s definitely a big girl!

Rider: Helaena Targaryen

Dreamfyre lives under the Dragonpit in King’s Landing. We saw her in one of the very first trailers for House of the Dragon, way back before the show had even started. We’re yet to see her in action, however, as of season two. Helaena tends not to ride her dragon much in the series.

It was implied in season two of House of the Dragon that Dreamfyre might well be the biological mother of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons, Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal, from Game of Thrones.

Caraxes

Caraxes has been by Daemon’s side for quite some time (Picture: HBO)

Age: 65 years old

Size: Really huge! You’ve seen him!

Rider: Daemon Targaryen

Caraxes might be the strangest dragon to look at in House of the Dragon, resembling a worm rather than a dragon sometimes, but rest assured – he’s a massive unit who can burn or crush several men at once.

Daemon has ridden him into battle just once so far in the series, when he faced the Crabfeeder all the way back at the beginning of season one. Caraxes crushed a loyal soldier to death with one toe, such is his size.

Meleys (Warning: Spoilers!)

Rhaenys rode Meleys into battle one last time… (Picture: HBO)

Age: Approx. 60-70 years old (dead)

Size: Huge! She was one of biggest dragons… Was.

Rider: Rhaenys Velaryon

Meleys was unfortunately caught up in one of the most tragic events of House of the Dragon thus far, when Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar dueled with Rhaenys at the Battle of Rook’s Rest. It didn’t end well for Meleys, whose neck was basically bitten in half.

Before that, she and Rhaenys escaped the Dragonpit in King’s Landing immediately after Aegon II was crowned. The common people weren’t happy when Meleys’ head was paraded through King’s Landing after her death.

Seasmoke (Warning: Spoilers!)

Seasmoke made Westerosi history in season two (Picture: HBO)

Age: Approx. 25 years old

Size: Large! We saw him up close!

Rider: Addam of Hull

Seasmoke was without a rider once Laenor Velaryon ‘died’ in season one. He’s been moping about in the sky and complaining ever since. He got so bored of waiting for a rider to claim him that he decided to just claim one for himself: Addam of Hull.

Syrax

Syrax has been around in House of the Dragon since the first episode (Picture: HBO)

Age: 35 years old

Size: Fairly large

Rider: Rhaenyra Targaryen

Syrax was the very first dragon we saw in House of the Dragon, as a young Rhaenyra Targaryen flew on her back through the clouds above King’s Landing. Since then, she’s popped up a few times, but is yet to see serious combat like some of the other dragons in the series.

Sunfyre (Warning: Spoilers!)

Things aren’t looking good for Sunfyre at the moment… (Picture: HBO)

Age: Approx. 20 years old

Size: About as large as Syrax and Meleys

Rider: Aegon II Targaryen

Said to be the most beautiful dragon in the Seven Kingdoms, Sunfyre – unfortunately for his rider Aegon – isn’t the largest. Aegon rode him into battle at Rook’s Rest and got tangled up in a bloody scrap between Aemond and Vhagar and Rhaenys and Meleys.

The battle was too much for Sunfyre, who went crashing to the earth in a ball of flames. Much like his rider Aegon, Sunfyre is badly hurt but still alive. We might not be seeing him for a while, but the yellow dragon’s role in House of the Dragon isn’t over yet.

Tessarion

Tessarion will finally appear in House of the Dragon (Picture: HBO)

Age: 15 years old

Size: We’re getting into the smaller dragons now…

Rider: Daeron Targaryen

Now, here’s a first: Tessarion is the first dragon in this list who is yet to be shown. That’s because his rider, Daeron Targaryen, son of Alicent Hightower, is also yet to show up in House of the Dragon. But don’t worry, Tessarion is coming, if the teaser for the season two finale is anything to go by.

Vermax

You can’t quite see Vermax (Picture: HBO)

Age: Approx. 10-15 years old

Size: Not the biggest, but he looks after himself!

Rider: Jacaerys Velaryon

We briefly saw Vermax from a distance when Jacaerys Velaryon went to the Twins to treat with Lord and Lady Frey. Vermax was even mentioned in conversation! So, that’s good for him! We’ll be seeing more of Vermax in the future.

Other dragons in House of the Dragon:

Arrax

Age: 10-14 years old (dead)

Size: Much smaller than Vhagar… ouch!

Rider: Lucerys Velaryon (RIP)

Moondancer

Age: 16 years old

Size: A decent size – we saw Moondancer chasing Criston Cole in season two, episode three.

Rider: Baela Targaryen

Tyraxes (Warning: Spoilers!)

Age: Approx. 5-10 years old

Size: Baby size! He’s a little dragon

Rider: Joffrey Velaryon (Rhaenyra and Laenor’s son)

Stormcloud (Warning: Spoilers!)

Age: Approx. 5-10 years old

Size: Baby size! Teeny tiny.

Rider: Aegon the Younger, Rhaenyra and Daemon’s son
