It’s hard to say what was more memorable: the final season of Game of Thrones, or the outcry that followed it, which resulted in nearly two million people signing a petition to redo the ending. Even now, passions run high in some quarters, but the Mother of Dragons herself is keeping things on an even keel.

Earlier this week, Thrones veteran Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) and Henry Golding appeared on This Morning to promote their new romantic comedy, Last Christmas. After some back and forth about the film and a discussion about Clarke’s health scare from a while back, the conversation turned to Dany’s heel turn in season 8, and how fans reacted to it. “Here’s the thing, on every level, it’s just profoundly flattering that people genuinely cared that much and they were with us for that long and that they really, really, truly believed in it,” Clarke said.

I don’t read anything online really because it doesn’t help my brain, but largely speaking I think people are being really kind about Daenerys and Mother Dragon and backing me up. So that’s lovely.

As far as the ending of the show is concerned, Clarke doesn’t think there exists an ending that would have made everyone happy. “No matter how many signatures were on any bit of paper, you just can’t and that is really just so flattering.”

It seems very much in Clarke’s wheelhouse to look at something that could be seen as antagonist and take something positive from it. No wonder she enjoys acting in romantic comedies.

Last Christmas hit theaters in the United States on November 9, and will be released everywhere else on November 15.
