Who knew the Dragon Queen used WhatsApp? (Picture: BACKGRID)

Emilia Clarke admitted that she only knew about the existence of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon thanks to the former cast members’ WhatsApp.

The actress appeared on The Tonight Show, where she was grilled by host Jimmy Fallon on her thoughts about the new show, which will track the Targaryen dynasty’s rise a few centuries before the main events of Thrones.

‘I heard that it’s happening,’ the Dragon Queen herself admitted. ‘We’ve got a group WhatsApp.

‘Someone popped it on today like, “look at that!”, and we were all like, “ooh!”‘

If you were wondering if the Last Christmas star could possible cameo in the new serial – given that it does concern Daenerys’ ancestors – you’ll be sorely disappointed as the actress pointed out that (spoiler) things didn’t end so great for Khaleesi in Thrones’ finale.

‘What am I going to do?’ she asked. ‘I sort of killed everyone, [flew] off on a dragon and…spoiler, I’m no longer alive.’

Sad news for Thrones, fans, surely but at least we know that a cast WhatsApp group exists.

House of the Dragon will be adapted from the events in author George RR Martin’s quasi-historical fiction tome Fire and Blood, which tracks the arrival of the Targaryen clan in Westeros and ends with a massive battle caused by an inter-family civil war called the Dance of the Dragons.

During her appearance on the chat show, Clarke also managed to spill the beans on one of the most controversial aspects of the fantasy epics final season – the identity of the owner of the now infamous scene-stealing coffee cup.

House of the Dragon’s commission for a full series came just a day after another Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts was cancelled by HBO.

The Mulholland Drive actress has already brushed off the axe though by ‘screaming it out.’

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available to stream on NOW TV.
