Emilia Clarke has admitted she’s having an existential crisis as she comes to the end of Game of Thrones.
The English actress has played the role of Daenerys Targaryen since 2011, and while she’s dipped her toe into other projects and movies (we’re still crying about Me Before You, let’s be honest), it’s got to be hard letting go of Dany.
It’s an idea not lost on the 31-year-old who spoke about the end of the GoT era after celebrating some more big wins for the show at this week’s Emmy Awards.
Speaking to E! News alongside co-stars Nathalie Emmanuel and Jacob Anderson, Emilia said on the ‘bittersweet’ end she was unsure of what to do with her life now.
She said: ‘Genuine! Existential crisis, like, legit, where you’re like, “What?”’
The crew wrapped filming on the set, mostly shot in Belfast, in July, and Emilia admitted there was ‘a lot of crying’ on the scene as the last ‘cut’ was called.
While Nathalie, who plays Daenerys’ right hand woman Missandei, agreed she wasn’t sure what her life meant without being an active part of the show.
‘The week after we finished was a really weird week,’ she said. ‘I just felt kind of disjointed and a bit, like, “Ohhh”. What does my life mean without Game of Thrones?’
Going into its last series – set to hit screens next year in one last blaze of glory – with a bang, the show took out Outstanding Drama Series at the Monday evening awards, beating out last year’s winner The Handmaid’s Tale, as well as, The Crown, Stranger Things, Westworld, The Americans and This Is Us.
The competition was tough and even Emilia admitted the cast and crew weren’t so sure they were going to take the award this year (an opinion held by many punters who voiced their shock at the Stranger Things and Handmaid’s Tale snub).
Emilia said of the win: ‘Every single one of the people up there, accepting that award…we didn’t think we were going to get it.’
Well, they did and isn’t that a nice little perk up before we all cry our eyes out that this is the end…
Game of Thrones Season 8 premieres in 2019.
