After spending eight years on HBO’s Game of Thrones portraying the Mother of Dragons, Emilia Clarke has made it clear: she will never take another fantasy role again. During press interviews for her new Peacock espionage series “Ponies,” Clarke opened up about her definitive break from the genre that defined her career.

Her declaration marks a significant shift for an actress who earned four Emmy nominations for her iconic role as Daenerys Targaryen, but whose final years on the show came with considerable personal strain.

Quick read:

  • Emilia Clarke told The New York Times she will “highly unlikely” ever do fantasy again after eight years on Game of Thrones.

  • She was devastated and blindsided when she learned Daenerys would become the Mad Queen, going for a five-hour walk in distress.

  • Though Clarke says she’s made peace with the show’s ending, her genre rejection reflects the deep emotional toll of her iconic role.

A Hard Goodbye to Westeros and Dragons

You’re highly unlikely to see me get on a dragon, or even in the same frame as a dragon, ever again,” Clarke told The New York Times during her recent press tour. The statement is unambiguous—Clarke’s departure from fantasy storytelling appears to be permanent.

This rejection goes beyond simple career exhaustion; it reflects deeper frustrations with how her character’s arc was executed in Game of Thrones’ tumultuous final season, when Daenerys’ transformation into the Mad Queen shocked both audiences and Clarke herself.

From Devastation to Acceptance—But Not Forgiveness of the Genre

Despite Clarke’s initial emotional turmoil, she has publicly stated she’s made peace with Game of Thrones and its ending. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2021, she said “I really have” made peace, though she acknowledged that “it’ll take me to my 90s to be able to objectively see what ‘Game of Thrones’ was” due to her deep personal investment in the role.

She even defended her own performance commitment to the character’s transformation, telling MTV that while she understood why fans were angry, “you can’t do justice to the character that you poured your blood, sweat and tears into for a decade without getting on the same page.”
