We finally have an answer as to which derelict Game of Thrones cast-member left an errant coffee cup out on the table in the middle of a scene this past season.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen on the popular HBO series, revealed the culprit to be Conleth Hill, a.k.a. the otherwise slick Varys.
The scene, which took place during a feast at Winterfell, quickly went viral and was spun into a meme. After the episodeâs original airing, HBO had the cup digitally excised out.
Because Daenerys happened to be seated by the cup, many presumed Clarke to be the offender. Though Hill was indeed seated right next to her.
HBOâs Twitter even joked, âThe latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. #Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.â Sophie Turner, who played Sansa Stark, also blamed Clarke during an earlier appearance on The Tonight Show.
Unable to live with the mix-up any longer, Hill came clean to Clarke at a pre-Emmy Awards party.
She recalled, âHe said, âI think it was (mine), I am sorry, darling. I didnât want to say anything because it seemed the heat was very much on you.â ⊠He said it. He mightâve been drunk, but he said it.â
Clarkeâs Thrones co-star Nathalie Emmanuel, however, tweeted she always believed the culprit to be Kit Harington (Jon Snow), so perhaps this is a mystery that will never officially be solved.
The cup would go on to become only one of the disappointments to befall the seriesâ eighth and final season: A plastic bottle would pop up in a later episode.
And, of course, the finale itself would go on to leave millions of fans unsatisfied, prompting many to sign petition to have the final season rewritten and reshot. Earlier this week, HBO confirmed the news that it scrapped plans for a highly-anticipated prequel series starring Naomi Watts.
Which means itâs back to waiting on George R.R. Martin and the rest of those books heâs been toiling away at for any substantial Thrones-ian material.
