Emilia Clarke suffered a life-threatening brain haemorrhage at 24 years old, but she says being a ‘resilient person’ helped her to get through the ordeal.
Back in March, Emilia publicly revealed a double brain aneurysm left her requiring life-saving surgery.
She had just finished filming for season one of Game Of Thrones in 2011 and had been exercising with her personal trainer when she fell ill and was later rushed to hospital, where she had to undergo surgery and spend over a week in intensive care to recover.
In 2013, Emilia required another op but the procedure failed and she suffered a massive bleed, forcing doctors to operate again, accessing her brain through her skull.
Speaking of her experience in a new interview with The Observer, Emilia has credited her ‘resilient’ character for getting her through it all and even says she now looks back at her ordeal as a ‘good thing’.
She explained: ‘I definitely think it’s a good thing. Having a brain haemorrhage that coincided precisely with the beginning of my career and the beginning of a show that became something quite meaty, it gave me a perspective that I wouldn’t have otherwise.
‘I’m quite a resilient human being, so a parent dying and brain haemorrhages coinciding with success and people following you in the street and getting stalkers – you’re just like, “Well, let’s try and make something sensible of it.”‘
Is there ever a time Emilia doesn’t ooze positivity? Hats off to her.
Emilia has praised the paramedics who helped her through her surgery and thanked them for making her giggle throughout her tough time in hospital.
She told People: ‘There I was, bleeding in the brain, and there we were in this ambulance having an absolute giggle. They were so gracious.’
‘The paramedics were unbelievable,’ she said. ‘They’d given me drugs so I was in less pain, wrapped me up like a tortilla and made me laugh the whole way to the hospital.’
Emilia has now launched a charity, SameYou, which aims to raise money for those recovering from brain surgeries and strokes.
