After being tipped to win the biggest prize of the night, Handmaid’s Tale joined Stranger Things as the two most notable shows to miss out at this year’s Emmys.
Handmaid’s Tale was tipped to beat Game of Thrones to Outstanding Drama by bookmakers ahead of tonight’s eventful ceremony, but instead left with nothing.
And despite another stunning season, Stranger Things was overlooked entirely too.
Instead, in the year it became the most nominated series in the Emmys 70 year history, Game of Thrones celebrated with another two prizes for Outstanding drama and Best Supporting actor for Peter Dinklage – who now ties with Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul for the most trophies ever.
‘Thank you, Dave [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] for changing my life. I cannot walk down the street anymore,’ Dinklage enthused while accepting his third Emmy.
‘But you are honestly the most talented, amazing people I know, besides my wife, Erica, who I think I forgot to thank a couple of years ago. So thank you, Erica, for putting up with me.
‘I’m very temperamental and I love you very much.’
And Benioff and Weiss returned the compliment as they stood before their cast, declaring: ‘Writing for these actors is the honour of a lifetime.’
Other highlights of the night included Thandie Newton dropping an F-bomb in a glorious speech during her win for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama series.
‘I didn’t even believe in God, but I’m going to thank her tonight,’ she told the star-studded audience.
But it was director Glenn Weiss who completely stole the show as he scrapped his acceptance speech to propose to his girlfriend Jan Svendsen instead.
And hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che set the tone for the night ahead as they opened the show by completely slating Roseanne Barr.
